iOS 8 will be able to scan and enter credit card data using the iPhone’s camera

Apple unveiled its next versions of iOS and OSX this week at WWDC and more information regarding what will be coming when the new operating systems go public is starting to surface. In iOS 8 Apple is introducing a new feature that will allow a device’s camera to read credit card numbers rather than users having to key them in manually when making a purchase, according to 9to5Mac.

The new feature is integrated directly into Safari on iOS 8 where users will be prompted with a “Scan Credit Card” feature when presented with a credit card field on websites. Apple then uses character recognition technology to auto fill data fields from the snap shot. From the sounds of it, Apple will not require support from retail websites and others that require credit card number input. The feature, not unlike what Apple is currently doing with iTunes gift cards and Apple IDs, will also work for expiration date and CVV fields.

For some, this may not seem all that useful considering in many cases users simply enter their credit card data once and have Apple’s Passwords & AutoFill system take care of it from there. However, Apple is also introducing the camera scanning feature inside its AutoFill system to allow users to use the new tech to input data from there as well, according to the report.

Flappy Bird to Return to the App Store in August, Will Be Multiplayer and ‘Less Addictive’

Flappy Bird creator Dong Nguyen today announced plans to return Flappy Bird to the App Store in August in a new interview with CNBC‘s Kelly Evans. According to Nguyen, the new version of Flappy Bird will be a multiplayer title that is “less addictive.”

Back in February, Nguyen unexpectedly pulled Flappy Bird from the App Store after it became wildly popular, due in part to the attention he was receiving. “Please give me peace,” he tweeted just a week before removing the app from the App Store. At the height of its popularity, the game was generating approximately $50,000 per day in revenue from in-app ads, causing a media frenzy.

‘iWatch in 60 Days or Bust’ Analyst Claims Apple Developing a 3D Printer

Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry has made a number of outlandish predictions when it comes to Apple, and his latest claim is that Apple is preparing to enter the 3D printer market. Chowdhry shared his thoughts with Benzinga, outlining his belief that Google is pursuing a 3D printer project based on its expectations that Apple will be making a similar move.

Chowdhry provides little to no details on Apple’s 3D printing plans, citing only the company’s experience in hardware and its intellectual property covering the technology as substantiation for his prediction.

“It’s either Apple or Microsoft [that inspired Google],” Chowdhry told Benzinga. “But developers feel that Apple is probably the focus for Google because Google considers Apple to be its prime competitor, not Microsoft. And Google really sees Apple to be a strong competitor, not Microsoft, because Microsoft has a lot of issues to worry about.” […]

“Apple does have intellectual property [in that space],” said Chowdhry. “And they often have more expertise in hardware development than, say, Microsoft has.”

Chowdhry also points to Apple’s acquisition of PrimeSense last year, with that firm’s 3D sensors made famous for their role in the original Microsoft Kinect perhaps playing a role in Apple’s 3D printing ambitions.

As for timing, Chowdhry doesn’t specify anything for Apple but speculates that Google could announce its 3D printing intentions this June or October with product launches coming a full 12-18 months later.

As if the unsubstantiated claims and seemingly nonsensical predictions weren’t enough to essentially dismiss the report as fanciful thinking, Chowdhry has a history of making grandiose claims. Freshest in many people’s memories is his claim earlier this year that Apple had 60 days to introduce the iWatch or the company “will disappear” as it proves itself unable to innovate in the post-Jobs era. Chowdhry’s deadline comes next Monday, with no sign of an imminent iWatch announcement.

Alleged ‘iPad Pro’ Model Shows What the Giant Tablet Might Look Like In-Hand

A model said to be an industrial prototype of the upcoming 12.9-inch “iPad Pro” has surfaced, giving a look at what the larger tablet might look like in-hand. Discovered on Chinese Twitter-like site Weibo by Nowhereelse.fr [Google Translation] the machined aluminum is said to be a reference for creating cases and other accessories.

The design of the mock up is very rudimentary and while it is said to be the iPad Pro, it is impossible to determine the exact size of the prototype from the photos. It is also not clear if this “prototype” is based on any type of legitimate specifications as Apple is said to be multiple months away from releasing a larger tablet. Along with a larger size, the model also has an Apple logo and a rear camera cutout. At 12.9-inches, the iPad Pro would be similar in size to a 13-inch Mac Book Air and quite a bit larger than the existing 9.7-inch iPad Air.

News that Apple was testing displays for a larger 12.9-inch iPad first surfaced in July of last year in a report from The Wall Street Journal. While initial rumors suggested Apple could release the device in 2014, reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has pointed towards a possible 2015 launch date for the device, while Digitimes indicated in March that development on the tablet had been shelved in favor of other projects.

Rumors have suggested the iPad Pro, if released, will adopt many of the same design elements offered in the current iPad Air and Retina iPad mini, including an ultra thin chassis and narrow side bezels. It is also rumored to include an ultra high-definition display.

iPhone 6 renders supposedly meant for accessory manufacturers leak, claim 6mm thinness

UkranianiPhone.com has posted images of what it claims are iPhone 6 renders aimed at helping manufacturers produce accessories for the upcoming device.

The images appear to be better quality versions of the schematics leaked a few weeks ago. They depict the full-metal backplate with inlets at the top and bottom, assumedly related to the antenna structure. The cutouts for these lines match the image from the previous leaks. Interestingly, the renders also give specific measurements saying that the phone is 138mm in height, 67 mm in width, and 6 mm in depth.

This is slightly taller and wider than the current iPhone 5s, which measures 124 mm by 59 mm. These sizes point to a screen of about 4.7 inches, as suggested many times before. These dimensions mean the iPhone will be similar in size to the Galaxy S5, albeit a tad shorter, for comparison.

Although not entirely clear, the renders seem to suggest that the Home Button may be getting slightly smaller. Unlike the current iPhone, the side edges are more rounded similar to the industrial design of an iPad.

In addition, the images once again show that the power button has been moved to the side. The main mystery of these images is that the dual-LED flash is not present, as the schematics show a return to the typical circular single LED flash shape. In fact, these pictures line up closely with this mockup.

The site posted images of the iPad mini in early October 2012, so has a reasonable track record of accuracy. The fact that these shots line up with the previously leaked schematics (shown below) also helps improve their reliability.

Apple Will Fix Your iPhone 5’s Sleep Button for Free—If You Qualify

Is your iPhone’s sleep/wake button finicky? You might be in luck. On Friday, Apple announced a new program to fix a small number of iPhone 5s with faulty buttons. Just input your phone’s serial number on this page to see if you qualify. And if you do, be prepared to be without your phone for a few days.

The repair process is pretty straightforward. Starting May 2, just take your phone to an Apple store or Apple authorized service provider, where they’ll verify it (again) and ship it back to Apple. If your phone has any other problems—say, a broken screen—that will get in the way of replacing the bad button, you’ll have to fix that problem first, or Apple will fix it for you for a probably pretty hefty fee. Good luck!

Apple To Launch 4.7- And 5.5-Inch iPhone As Soon As September, Report Claims

Apple is said to be readying to release its next iPhone in both 4.7- and 5.5-inch screen sizes, with a launch as early as September, according to a report by Japanese business news publication Nikkei today. The production cycle is already ramping up, with component makers producing elements like fingerprint sensors and LCD driver chips, according to the paper, with LCD mass production kicking off in the April-June quarter.

Apple is also expected to increase the display resolution of these devices compared to current models, which could be designed to keep pixel density high on the larger new screens. Full HD resolution is a likely possibility if these rumors are true.

While it’s risky to go trusting rumors about iPhone launches this early, the Nikkei’s report has a few things that make it ring true. First, the 4.7- and 5.5-inch screen sizes have been reported previously by Bloomberg, and the Wall Street Journal also chiming in early this year to say two larger phones are in development. Also, Nikkei reported last year that the iPhone 5s and 5c would launch September 20 in Japan before either was officially announced, which was exactly when they did end up arriving.

Critics have long called for Apple to release devices with larger screen sizes, and so far, the rumor mill indicates it will finally go beyond the 4-inch display shared by the iPhone 5, iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s. We’ll likely have to wait for fall to find out for sure, but for now, start stretching out those thumbs.

Apple Patents A Surface-Like Touch Keyboard Smart Cover With A Trackpad Twist

Apple has a new patent for an iPad accessory (via Patently Apple) that incorporates keyboard features into the design of a new smart cover. The touch-based cover resembles the one Microsoft’s Surface uses for input, but it has a unique twist which is the basis for the patent – multi-touch gesture support that turns the whole cover into a trackpad, rather than limiting that to a dedicated space like that found on the Surface version.

The cover consists of both a back panel that could be used to prop up the iPad, like the one that currently exists, as well as a keyboard section that can use both keyed input and multi-touch. Gestures could include the typical ones supported in iOS already, in addition to others to be determined, and the case would snap onto the iPad using its embedded magnets, with different folding methods that could hide both keyboard and cover away behind the back of the device, or protect the front by folding over, too.

After spending some time using the Microsoft Surface touch keyboard cover, I can say that I’d appreciate a similar accessory for the iPad, too. Ditching the dedicated touchpad and rerouting gesture input should clear up room, making for a less bulky and more portable product that saves all the room it uses for key spacing, so that definitely sounds like a plus. Apple has patented a number of possible expansions to its magnet-based Smart Case system in the past, and this is just the latest. It’s also the most practical, however, so hopefully we’ll see it introduced as a way to diversify the iPad accessory line-up somewhere down the line.

Apple unveils CarPlay, calls it “the best iPhone experience on four wheels”

Today at the Geneva Motor Show Apple unveiled a new service that aims to provide better connectivity between the car and the driver’s iPhone. Dubbed CarPlay, the service allows drivers to make calls, access contacts, use maps, listen to music, and more, without taking their hands from the steering wheel. Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo are showcasing the service at Geneva this week with CarPlay-enabled vehicles shipping this same month.

“iPhone users always want their content at their fingertips and CarPlay lets drivers use their iPhone in the car with minimized distraction”, said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice president of iPhone and iOS Product Marketing.

Drivers can read messages and dictate responses through Apple’s voice-activated Siri software, which is activated by pressing the voice control button on the car’s steering wheel. The service can also predict destinations based upon addresses found in your email, texts, contacts, and calendars.

The service also allows you to play music through the car’s speakers. Besides iTunes Radio, you can also access a number of third-party music-streaming apps including Spotify, Stitcher, iHeartRadio, and Beats Radio. You can also control CarPlay from the car’s native interface.

According to Apple, in addition to the three car companies aforementioned BMW, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Land Rover, Kia, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Peugeot, Citroën, Subaru, Suzuki and Toyota will also integrate the service “down the road.” The CarPlay service is available as an update to iOS 7 and works with Lightning-enabled iPhones including iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, and iPhone 5.

Apple releases iOS 7.1 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch with new features, visual tweaks and more

As expected, Apple has released an updated version of its mobile operating system just one day before the annual iTunes Festival kicks off for the first time ever at SXSW. iOS 7.1 includes a number of new features, interface tweaks and bug fixes for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch as outlined below.

Arriving roughly six months after the launch of iOS 7, the first major update includes support for CarPlay. Formerly known as the iOS in the car initiative, Apple unveiled CarPlay a week ago during the Geneva Motor Show with support from Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo.

Apple also improved the Touch ID fingerprint recognition system found on the iPhone 5s. Elsewhere, users can now control how long Siri listens for voice commands by simply holding down the Home button as you speak. The personal assistant also received improved voices in Mandarin Chinese, Australian English, UK English and Japanese which are said to sound more natural.

New accessibility options include a bold font option for the keyboard, calculator and many icons, the ability to reduce motion in Weather, Messages and multitasking UI animations and the ability to darken app colors and reduce white point.

In a somewhat rare move for the Cupertino-based company, they’ve published a full page that outlines all of the new features in iOS 7.1 that can be seen by clicking here.

iOS 7.1 is compatible with the iPhone 4 and newer as well as the iPad 2 and later and the 5th generation iPod touch.
